Climb the Heights Skipping Challenge

The pupils participated in a Climb the Heights skipping challenge for 4 weeks and are making fantastic progress. They are also promoting physical activity at home by getting others involved to help build up their skips for the week.

Congratulations also to the pupils in our slideshow for showing fantastic commitment throughout:

Active Schools
Walkway

We made a walkway route around the school to promote physical activity:
  • ENERGISING the school day
  • Supporting the PHYSICAL EDUCATION programme
  • Promoting ACTIVE LEARNING across a wide variety of subject areas

Active School Walkway

We use our Active Walkway route to promote physical activity and to complete the Run Around Ireland Challenge.

Run Around Ireland Challenge

  • This challenge involves the pupils monitoring their running distances and comparing them to the distance to locations on a map. The pupils can challenge themselves to run to various destinations around Ireland.
  • This challenge incorporates Maths, Geography, P.E., English, Gaeilge and History which is a fantastic way of learning for pupils in an integrated way.
  • This challenge is a great way for pupils to learn about Ireland’s most famous landmarks, and to bring learning outdoors.
  • It supports the Athletics strand of the PE curriculum and gives pupils the opportunity to develop good running technique.

Partnerships
Bike Week

We partnered with Laois Sports Partnership to do a cycle to school during Bike Week, well done to the pupils and the school community for the support in such a fantastic event.

Physical Education

In this section we explore some of the programmes we will cover as part of the Active Schools initiative.

PAWS Water Safety

Water Safety Ireland’s PAWS (Primary Aquatics Water Safety) outlines the essential life-saving guidelines that every child needs to know.

Written and designed for all age groups, with beautiful illustrations, a wealth of tips and advice, and all sorts of interactive games and puzzles to reinforce the lessons learned, PAWS offers simple common sense on how we can be safe around our waterways.

Active Schools Committee

As part of the Active Schools initiative we made our Active Schools Committee, consisting of pupils from 1st to 6th class.

It is a wonderful opportunity for pupils to take on a leadership role and work with the other pupils in the school.
